Here's anEnglish version forall ofthe Shahmen fans outthere!

About labels andimages

There isvery little information about youonline

Yeah, thats been avery intentional choice until recently.

Why? Andwhy youchanged your mind?

Well, thefirst thing isthat Im notjust amusician, Im anartist andIdo alot ofdifferent things. Sobefore myrap career Iwas studying films, andIhad already said noto abig record deal. Bythe time, Iwas 18. Myultimate goal forthe rest ofmy live isto bea filmmaker, andInever thought that trying tobe abig rapper orwhatever will help meto gettothat goal. Sothe wayIapproached music back then wasnot tohave commercial success.

When Idecided todo myfirst album Enter thecircle theinternet andthe world were changing. Itwasnt about themusic asmuch asit wasabout theperson.

The music Igrew upon, thethings that inspired mewere allabout themusic, andyou learned about theperson afterword. There wasnosocial media. When Idiscovered Nirvana, orOutcast, orWu-Tang, Idiscovered their music. Andonce Im inlove with themusic, Ikind offind outmore about theperson. Then allofthe sudden, inmid 2000s late 2000s, when Iwas starting toput mymusic together, everything wasshifting. Itwas allabout theimage, 50 Cent wasthe biggest guyatthe time.

Iremember that

Iwanted togive kids something that would last. So, Imade adecision that Iwouldnt shoot anymusic videos, Iwouldnt have anysocial media, Iwouldnt promote it. Andonthe cover ofthe album itwould just bea drawing ofa wolf andacrow. That wasthe point. Thepoint wastoput this kind ofa little treasure forthe kids ofthe next generation, whowanted something magical andspecial.

Butwhy youchanged your mind?

After Ireleased that album Igot another bigrecord label offer, butItold them that Ididnt want todo it, that Iwanted todo film. Thats howIstarted towork inInterscope andstarted making videos forother rapartists like Kendrick Lamar andsuch. During that time mymusic wasgetting more andmore popular, andevery dayIwas getting e-mail after e-mail from these people whowere really touched bythat music. Iteither helped them, orchanged them, andthey were dying formore. Idealt with itevery single dayand itmade merealize that those people Imade itfor actually didneed it. Andthey found itan spread itall around theworld. Iwas hearing from kids from 3540 different countries. Andimpact ofthat made mefeel like Iow itto theUniverse tocontinue talking tothem andmaking more music. Universe onits ownturned Shahmen into cultish thing. SoI hadaduty tofinish what Istarted.

About popularity andbeing acelebrity

Whydid youturn down ahuge record label notonce, buttwice?

Thething inlife Ireally want todo isbeing afilmmaker. Andthe whole thing ofbeing commercially successful bigrapper hasnothing todo with music, andIm notsointerested inthat. Iwant tobe anartist, Idont want tobe acelebrity. Ijust want tocreate stuff. Youcan look atsomeone like Kanye, whocomplains allthe time, that because heis arapper, people dont take himseriously with other things hewants todo. AndIm notatype ofguy wholikes tocomplain. Ijust avoid something ifI seethat itdoesnt work forme.

This isactually aquestion that Ialways askevery musician: didyou want tobe famous. Andyou didnt

No. InHigh school Iwas already kind ofpopular andknown among LosAngeles. Iwas always abit popular, sono. Iknew allthe things Ihad tolose too. Soif youcome outside myhouse inthe morning when Im taking outthe trash, Im notgoing tosmile andwave.

Butdoyou feel popular?

When Icome toEurope, yes. Iget recognized inthe street orin ataxi cab. ButinAmerica, ifIm notinLA orNew-York, Ican betotally undercover.

About bigcorporations andreal music

Where doyou live now?

NowIm inAmsterdam. Ilive everywhere because ofthe things Ido. Ive been living inAmsterdam, inMexico, inColumbia. Ihave myapartment inVenice Beach, butIm atraveler ona road.

Isthere anydifference between music industry andmusic making process inUSA, which ishuge, andEurope?

Theres adifference andits been there forawhile. InAmerica whenever thenew thing comes along ithas this period when its really special andall theyoung kids areinto it, itkind ofchanges culture. Andassoon asits clear that itmakes alot ofmoney allthe corporations gettheir hands init andmake watered down boring version ofit. Andthe kids move onto thenext thing. Ithappens really fast. AndinEurope youcan still goto ascene, ahip-hop scene especially, that hasall theenergy, sounds andattitude ofwhat itwas inAmerica before. Its like atime machine. Itotally like this way, inEurope. Thats whyIve always been able todo what Ive done, which isto betheonly rapper whoisnot promoting himself andstill manages toget fans. Because ofthat Ihave this amazing freedom tomake something that isexactly what Iwant tomake.

Well this isall about theindependence. Canyou beindependent like that inAmerica? Canyou bevery popular, butstill independent?

No. Notreally. Ifyou areindependent andpopular inAmerica, youare just popular inyour city. Youare able tobe independent inyour city andmake decent money, butyou cant tour over United States.

Asan artist have youever wanted, maybejust foramoment, that waymore people knew about your stuff?

Ive worked atbig label andIlook atthis ina very specific way. Iput itlike this toyou. IfI make asong theonly person Iconcern with ismyself liking that song. Because ifeveryone loves itand Ihate it, that doesnt mean anything tome. Iam theperson that hastobe satisfied, andwhen other people like ittoo, nowwehave something special. ButifI make afilm, Im notaperson Im trying toimpress. Inever wanted toreach thebig group with mymusic, Ialways wanted toreach thebig group with myfilms. Ican have asatisfaction with music with just satisfying myself andIdont have thesame with films. IfI show youthe film andyou sayyou dont understand itthen Ifailed, 'cause its storytelling

Wait, butmusic isalso astorytelling, isnt it?

Yes, butits abstract. Youcan already have arelationship with it, even before youunderstand thewords. Orthe words dont even have tobe there sometimes.

One thing Ithought about recently that gets tothe core ofwhat youare talking about isthis. Musicians, whoare successful, areintwo groups. Youare either inthe group Im in, when notthat many people know about you, butyou arevery popular within this group, youhave afan base. Andwhen youare inthe other group, everybody knows whoyou are, buteveryone still waits foryou tomake that song orthat album that gives youthat real fanbase. Therere bigrappers inAmerica whosign this deals, andeverybody knows whothey are, butthey dont getnearly thedaily streams orviews Iget. Iwas able toget where Iam onmy own, sowhy atthis point would Ijump into other pool?

About rock vsrap

Whydid youstart tomake music?

Natural love. When Iwas 8 years old, Iwanted tobe asongwriter andtohave aband.

What kind ofband?

Thefirst band Iwas into, wasNirvana, soI wanted tohave arock band.

Then itturned into rapsomehow

Well, theonly thing like Nirvana atthat time inAmerica wasSnoop. Those guys were homies, they were making something new. Thats what Igrew upunder, itwas always mixed together, itwas allthe same tome. Istarted towrite myown songs andthe songs were always amix ofrock andrap. Forexample, Rage Against TheMachine isfrom mycity, when Iwas little Iwould seethem around. Sothere wasnoseparation forme. Rapand rock wasalternative hard shit.

Whysodark?

Im notone ofthese rappers whowrite abunch oflyrics andthen come tothe studio andfind some beats toput them on. Ihear thesong andIwrite itright there. Ive tried writing theother, notasdark sounding beats, butitnever works.

Could itbe theway toget ridofthe darkness inyour life, inyour head, oris itjust music andnothing more?

Itell youafunny story. Ihave afriend whomakes pretty happy stuff, andone dayhesaid tome: You know, Bless, yousmile waymore than Iever do, butyou always making this dark assmusic. Ithink Irealized youare wayhappier than me. Soits notconscious, butIthink you're absolutely right. Its myway ofromanticizing theugliness oflive anddealing with it.

About themost popular song

Alot ofpeople Italked to, some ofmy friends whodont even listen torap, they still know youbyjust onesong Mark.

Its crazy, because Mark isnot even asong

Exactly! Whydoyou think that happens? Because asfor me, Ido like Mark, itis asong, butIthink youhave more interesting stuff

Its acouple ofthings. Butyoure right. Wenever thought Mark would bethe hit. Andinthe first couple ofyears itwasnt. Thefirst real subculture community that wetook offwas street racing. There were twovery famous Georgian andRussian guys, Iguess, thefavorite song ofone ofthem wasMark. Andhedied. AndMark isabout myfriend Mark whodied. Sosince then among their fans Mark became amemory song forhim andbecame kind ofa theme song forthis BMWand Mercedes racing community.

So, byaccident?

O, completely byaccident. They made somuch content with it, then itspread tothe fewother subcultures. AndIve spent time thinking about it, like, wait, what thefuck, because Imake waymore money from Mark than anyother song.

Then Igot it. Its aquick waytocatch what isdifferent about Shahmen inone minute. Itopens with original cello line. Itsounds like aclassical song, butits original, its notasample. Its been along time inpopular music that youve heard aclassical instrument playing something newfor your ears. Sosubconsciously itgrabs people. Andthen Istart rapping, andits clear that Im rapping notabout what anyone rapped before.

Areyou proud ofthat song? Doyou like it?

Omy gosh, that wasmyfirst close friend whodied, soI think its thecoolest thing inthe world that thats ournumber 1 song. Thats howitshould be. Anditchanged something inmy mind, because Im making real money ofit. Andtheres nochorus, its just merapping, nothing about that should bepopular. Ifpeople canlove youjust rapping foraminute, they canlove your other songs.

Also that isbecause ofyour voice, because your voice isreally something-something.

Andinhip-hop itused tobe important tohave avoice, itwas about thevoice

I know! (Bless laughing). I cant doanything, Ido like old-school hip-hop. Ijust cant listen toanything new, except, maybe, Kendrick.

Right! Thats because foreverybody else theimage comes before themusic. Butthe sound hastobe there from thebeginning, youknow what Imean? Otherwise, youwould lose what people love about you. Cant make toomuch ofa cheap version.

Butdoyou enjoy going ontours, talking tojournalists, showing youface now?

Absolutely, because Im happy with everything about mymusic, because Im able todo itthe wayIwant todo it.

About powerful females

Youmentioned Snoop andNirvana. What other influences didyou have?

Outcast. Butassoon asI wasactually good atrapping, myinfluences havent really come from rappers anymore. Andfor thepast maybe 10 years Iget myinspiration from female singers, like Sade. Sheismy number one. People like Fiona Apple. Newsingers like Jorja Smith. Ireally like SZA.

Whyfemales?

Because they have theprospective Im notgoing tohave. Im notgoing toever pick upon those details they pick upon. What they aredoing with their voice, Icant doit with mine. Soif Sade isdoing this beautiful trick, formeto steal that trick Ihave toturn itinto something completely different. Andthat keeps myshit newand changing allthe time. Andalso Ihave avery manpoint ofview, soits always important tolearn from those wise women. Themost successful wolf athunting isalpha wolf, because hehas female partner.

About wolves andcrows

Youhave alot ofanimal images inyour lyrics. What isthat about?

Ahave adegree inpsychology from Columbia University. Sothere Ilearned that everything weunderstand about humans orany technology were creating, these things already exist inanimal world. There isnothing new. Allthis metaphors that Igave youisprobably because ofwhere Istudied.

Im also Native American andinour mythology thewolves arethe ancestors ofmen. Andeverything isconnected through theanimal world. TheCrow isthe Black Eagle. Hewas theWhite Eagles brother andthe White Eagle kept telling himtofly higher andhigher until theBlack Eagle gotburned andbecame black. This iswhy theCrow isan ominous spirit, that seems tobe connected todeath. Crows live where past andpresent andfuture isone thing. Also crows arethe smartest animals onearth. Noother animals made more sets oftools toget food. Crows andwolves hunt together. Crows flyaway andthen come back andtell wolves where thefood is. Thewolves kill itand dont itmeat along thebones, theeat mainly intestines andcrows pick thebones. They have alanguage, thecrow comes down andbarely hitthe wolf andthe wolf chases it.

This isa stuff Im interested in, this iswhere itcomes from.

About hisshows andlifetime experiences

Youare coming toRussia really soon. What dowe expect from your show?

Much more than just thesongs youlove.

What else?

Im going tobe performing some ofthe songs, that youve never heard. There isgoing tobe alot ofstuff from theoriginal Enter thecircle session. With youthere infront ofme andmerapping youwill experience thebest rapping story asit happens. Its very deep spiritual experience. Everybody whoisShamens fan, whoisgoing tobe atthat show isgoing towalk away with that lifetime experience. That spiritual sense youget inthe music, itis outofthis world. Youwill seethat this isnot just about this guy, this guyisable tocatch something.

Iactually hadthis feeling atthe show once. AndIhave seen real legends like Chili Peppers orRammstein performing, andIlove them, butIhad this feeling only once. Itwas when Isaw Tricky. Andactually, your music reminds mea little bitofwhat hedoes.

Well, then youunderstand! Ithink heis maybe agodfather ofmy style. When Iwas young, atthe same time Iwas getting into Kurt andSnoop Iwas reading every Tricky interview Icould.

Im soin love with what hedoes

Metoo! Him, Massive Attack. Sothat isa kind ofway foryou tounderstand. Atthat time itwas notabout rock andrap, itwas about what isdope andreal. Anddope isreal happens tobe both.
